India Revises Food Safety and Standards on the Labeling Declaration Regulations of Mixed Oils
On November 17, 2021, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued document STD/SP-15/G/2021 to amend the food safety and standard labelling declaration regulations for mixed oils. The main revisions are as follows:
(1) If the mixture contains 70% A oil and 30% B oil (but not less than 20%), a specified nutritional function claim for A oil only can be made;
(2) If 57% of A oil and 49% of B oil are in the mixture, a specified nutritional function claim specified only for oil A can be made;
(3) If the mixed oil contains 70% A oil, 25% B oil and 5% C oil (linseed oil or chili seed oil), the nutritional function of the label A oil can be declared, and it also includes information about omega -3 to omeg-6 content ratio;
(4) If the mixed component oils of multi-source edible oils are each 50%, only the nutritional function declarations shared by the two oils can be marked;
(5) If the ingredient oils mixed with multi-source edible oils have conflicting nutritional function claims, such claims cannot be made.
The amendment will be implemented on the date of publication.
