Global sales of Peruvian blueberries rose 37% year-on-year in the 2021-2022 export season that just ended, according to Proarándanos, the Peruvian blueberry Producers' association.
Peru sold 220,000 tons of blueberries overseas in the 2021-2022 export season (July 2021 to April 2022), increased 37% year on year, reported Simfruit.cl, the website of the Chilean Fruit Exporters association. In the 2022-2023 export season, it forecasts Peru's blueberry exports to be about 277,000t, will increase 25% year on year, mainly due to higher exports to China (+3 %), the UK (+1%) and the EU (+1%).
Fernando Cillóniz Bemavides, president of Inform@cción, a consultancy, has the same prediction: "Peru, already the world's leading exporter of blueberries, is consolidating its position as number one, further distancing itself from the second and third largest exporters."
Peru's export market for fresh blueberries has been expanding in recent years. According to Proarándanos association members, Peruvian blueberries were successfully introduced into India last year with sales of about 23 tonnes. For this year, Peru's National Agricultural Health Service (Senasa) reports that negotiations on blueberry trade with Israel are finalizing, and Israel is expected to become the 32nd export market for Peruvian blueberries.
