Turkey revises regulations on halal certification bodies

On 9 May 2022, Turkey issued announcement G/TBT/N/TUR/197, amending law No. 7060 "Provisions on Halal Certification Bodies".  According to the announcement, Halal certification and compliance with halal food standards are not mandatory in Turkey.  However, for the public interest, halal-certified products and services should be reliable and unchangeable, and product logos, labels and certifications should not mislead consumers.  Halal certification businesses must be regularly evaluated by an independent and qualified public body to ensure that products and services that have been "halal certified" will not provide false or misleading information to consumers.  Halal Certification Authority is the only public body authorized to provide halal certification services in Turkey.  The arrangements are designed to maintain the voluntary nature of halal compliance assessments, provide correct information to consumers, and protect the public interest through halal certification related businesses.  In this respect, the aim is to prevent unassessed certification bodies from conducting halal certification business and prevent non-compliant halal certificates from appearing on the market.  In addition, administrative penalties will be imposed on organizations that illegally carry out halal certification and halal conformity evaluation without certification evaluation and recognition.

The law has been passed since its promulgation.  The regulation will take effect one year after its promulgation.
