The US Department of Agriculture recently released its latest medium and long-term agricultural development forecast report, showing that the global chicken consumption will increase by 16.7% in 2031 compared with 2021. Over the same period, demand for all meats increased most dramatically in middle-income regions such as Southeast Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East.
The data also showed that Brazil will remain the world's largest chicken exporter in the next decade, accounting for 32.5% of global export growth and exporting 5.2 million tons, up 19.6 from 2021. The United States, the European Union and Thailand followed with 4.3 million tons, 2.9 million tons and nearly 1.4 million tons of chicken exports in 2031, up 13.9% , 15.9% and 31.7% respectively. As the profitability of the chicken industry has gradually emerged, most countries and regions around the world, especially those with low and middle income groups, tend to promote the export of chicken, so the production and consumption of chicken will increase more significantly than beef and pork in the next decade, the report said. By 2031, the U.S., China and Brazil will account for 33% of global chicken consumption, making China the world's largest consumer of chicken, beef and pork.
A promising market
Compared with last year, chicken consumption will grow much faster in developing countries (20.8%) than in developed countries (8.5%) in 2031, with faster population growth in developing and emerging countries (such as some in Africa) driving the strong growth, the agency said.
In addition, the agency forecasts that the world's major importers will import 15.8 million tons of chicken annually in 2031, up 20.3 %(26 million tons) from 2021, with good prospects for the import markets of Asia, Latin America, North Africa and the Middle East.
According to the report, As chicken consumption gradually exceeds the total domestic production, China will become the world's largest importer of chicken. It is estimated that the annual import of chicken in The Chinese market will reach 1.2 million tons by 2031, a significant increase of 30.9 % compared with 2021. Annual exports of chicken meat were 571,000 tons and net imports 218,000 tons, up 23.4% and nearly 40% respectively.
