Japan plans to revise 3 food standards

On July 12, 2022, Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries issued consultation documents no. 550003518, 550003519 and 550003520, proposing to revise 3 food standards. The main amendments are as follows:

(1) The Agricultural and Forestry Standard of Carrot Juice and its Mixed Juice revised the classification and composition requirements of carrot mixed juice, such as the content of food additives should not exceed 3%, and added the determination method of total carotene in products;

(2) The Agricultural and Forestry Standard of Fruit Juice Beverage, added fruit juice beverage reference standard, revised general requirements for fruit juice beverage product label (such as label should indicate name, shelf life, storage methods, raw materials, additives, the nine basic information such as the country of origin), a new enrichment and mixed juice products such as tag labeling method;
(3) The Agriculture and Forestry Standard of Apple juice revised the definition of apple juice. I.E. Apple juice is the liquid obtained by pressing and filtering, and use of antioxidants is not allowed. Meanwhile, the testing method of sugar and acidity of finished products was revised; Supplementary provisions of apple juice raw materials from the certification of a specific origin, the label is allowed to mark "use XX (origin) apple" or "use XX (country) apple" or similar terms.

The period for feedback on the above consultation document ends on August 11, 2022.
