Sputnik -- about half of the restaurants in Britain that specialize in the country's popular fish and chips may close due to the rising cost of ingredients and energy caused by sanctions against Russia, the British medai Daily Express reported.
"Around 5,000 [fish and chips] snack bars could be at risk as shops are forced to raise prices and switch to selling cheaper food," the report said.
The newspaper noted that Britain had previously imposed a 35 % import duty on seafood from Russia.
Andrew Crook, owner of a fish and chips restaurant in Lancashire, said the price of cod supplies had risen from £8 to £14 per kg.
Fish and chips restaurant operators in the UK said they intend to turn to Norway for fish supplies in an attempt to curb price rises caused by UK sanctions against Russia.
