On September 6, 2022, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan issued a standard notice to revise several food standards. The main contents include:
(1) Formulated the MAFF Standards for Vegetarian or Pure Vegetarian Foods (standard JAS0025: 2022), the main contents include the product definition (vegetarian food allowed to add egg, milk or honey ingredient, pure vegetarian foods should not contain any ingredient of animal origin), classification, raw materials allowed, production and processing, packaging and labelling requirements, etc.;
(2) Formulated MAFF Standards for Low-Protein Processed Brown Rice (Standard No. JAS0027: 2022), mainly including terms and definitions, quality and characteristic indicators (e.g., protein content not more than 280mg/100g, potassium content not more than 1mg/100g, phosphorus content not more than 20mg/100g, γ-oryzanol content greater than 5mg/100g, Dietary fiber content greater than 1g/100g), production and processing requirements (mainly refers to low protein processing process), eating methods, etc.;
(3) Revised Standards for Grading and Labeling of Food, Beverages and Oils, mainly to add labeling requirements for low-protein processed brown rice.
The above standards shall take effect from the date of promulgation.
