The General Administration of Customs (GACC) recently announced that kiwifruit from Italy will be allowed to be transported to China via refrigerated ships from September 7.
Shipping requirements stipulate that kiwifruit must be shipped in separate compartments and that the same compartments cannot be loaded with goods for export to other countries or regions. The cabin shall not be opened before the arrival at China port, and the cargo shall only be unloaded at the designated port in China. Each shipment shall have adequate measures to prevent reinfection of pests by covering each pallet with mesh film with a maximum aperture of less than 1.6mm (except kiwi fruit packed in ziploc bags or mesh bags with a diameter of less than 1.6mm).
Cold treatment of kiwifruit can be performed before shipment or in transit. When the kiwifruit transported by "refrigerated ship" arrives at the entry port, the cold treatment report of each cabin and the correction record of fruit temperature probe should be provided. If the cold treatment of a certain cargo is deemed invalid, the kiwifruit in this cargo shall be returned, destructed or implemented of cold treatment on shore .
Italy is one of the world's leading producers of kiwifruit, with the annual season running from November to May. In September 2020, Italian kiwifruit was approved to be exported to China by ship, and the annual import volume is now stable at about 6,000-7,000 tons.
