On January 24, 2023, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued industry guidelines for action levels of lead in food for infants and young children.
This guidance is intended to reduce lead levels in foods for infants and young children to the lowest possible level, setting limits of 10 ppb for fruits, vegetables (excluding single-component root vegetables), mixtures (including cereal and meat mixtures), yogurt, custard/pudding and single-component meats; Root vegetables (single component) 20 ppb; Dry grain is 20 ppb.
For infants and young children consuming foods covered in this draft guideline, FDA estimates that these action levels could reduce food lead exposure by 24-27%.
