On 4 March 2023, the Australian BICON website published import requirements for collagen and casings for human consumption, effective from the date of publication. Specific requirements are as follows:
(1) A valid import licence issued by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) is required before the goods can be imported into Australian territory;
(2) Collagen must meet the following import conditions: The following must be shown on the health certificate: if collagen comes from land animal skin or fur, a declaration that collagen comes from animal skin/skin, a declaration that collagen has been commercially prepared;
(3) Each shipment must be packed in clean, new packaging and must be free of live insects, seeds, soil, soil, clay, animal material (e.g. faeces), plant material (e.g. straw, twigs, leaves, roots, bark) and other debris before its arrival on Australian territory;
(4) Each shipment must provide the following documents: identify the consignment (if not personal), such as the entry number; identify all goods imported as part of this consignment, such as invoices or waybills or the importer's manifest; describe the goods imported.
