On 22 June 2023, the Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety of the European Commission published Communication G/SPS/N/EU/645 amending the draft Commission Regulation amending Annex II to Regulation (EC) No1333/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council and Annex (EU) No 231/2012.

based on the recent scientific opinion of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) that the safety of stearyl tartrate (E483) cannot be assessed, the draft removes the authorisation for the use of stearyl tartrate (E483) in food. To facilitate a smooth transition, the draft provides that foods containing stearyl tartrate (E483) used in accordance with the rules applicable prior to the date of implementation of this Regulation may continue to be marketed until the minimum shelf life or "shelf life" for such foods is reached. The regulation is expected to be published in the third quarter of 2023, with the proposed entry into force 20 days after publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.
