On 11 November 2023, according to foreign media sources, Meiji Milk, a well-known Japanese dairy brand, announced a recall of 45,000 bottles of bottled milk already on the market due to the detection of veterinary drug residues in the product.
It is understood that the name of the veterinary drug residue detected is sulfamethoxazole, and the affected products were produced by Meiji Dairy's Kansai plant in Kaizuka City, Osaka Prefecture, mainly in 180ml bottle models for home delivery. The products are currently being sold in many areas of Japan, including western and central parts of the country.
The Osaka Prefectural Government instructed Meiji Dairy to recall the milk based on relevant food hygiene regulations, although no reports of health damage have been received for the time being.
