On 22 December 2023, the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) issued a circular amending the import conditions for frozen (chilled) non-salmon finfish. The amendment applies only to the importation of the following fish:

(1) Gutted headless 'pan' fish weighing not more than 450g each;

(2) Headless and gutted fish that have been salted, dried or smoked;

(3) Headed, gilled and gutted fish only. Evidence must be provided on the bill of lading for the importation of the above frozen fish to prove that the goods were transported in containers at or below 4 degrees Celsius. If evidence cannot be provided or is insufficient, the cargo will be subject to mandatory inspection on arrival to ensure that it does not contain biosecurity risk substances.

The amendment is effective from 22 December 2023 onwards.
