Russians consume more than a fifth of global exports of oranges

At the end of September 2023, Russia accounted for 20% of global imports of oranges, or 406,000 tonnes. The Russian Federation also leads orange imports by currency, while the United States is second, according to publicly available data and data from the Russian Association of Food Producers and Suppliers.

 

US is the second largest importer of oranges, accounting for 13 per cent of global imports at 242,000 tonnes. It was followed by the UK with 8% (or 153,000 tonnes), France with 7% (or 138,000 tonnes) and Germany with 107,000 tonnes of oranges imported (6%).

 

Russia and the US were also leaders in terms of orange imports by currency, purchasing $421 million and $396 million worth of oranges in the first nine months of 2023, respectively.

 

The Mainland of China made it into the top 10 largest importers of oranges, purchasing $81 million worth of this citrus fruit.

 

In Russia, oranges have always been one of the main symbols of the New Year and Christmas. During the winter holidays, these citrus fruits become an indispensable part of every New Year's table.
