Belgium issued official communication on beef traceability and labeling

On 3 January 2024, the Belgian Federal Food Safety Authority (FFSA) issued an official communication on beef traceability and labeling with the following main points:

 

(1) Purpose and main points : in addition to the general traceability and labeling requirements, it specifically clarifies the traceability and labeling requirements for beef; all operators selling beef in the EU are required to use an identification (labeling) and registration system at all stages of production and marketing, and in addition to the EU-wide obligations, a number of additional requirements have been established at the national level, and the Communication provides specific guidance on the identification and registration system ;

 

(2) Scope of application: fresh, chilled or frozen (including buffalo (Bubalus babalis) and American bison (Bison ) breeds, fresh minced beef, septums, etc.) of any age (for fresh mixed meat products containing more than one breed, beef-specific labeling is mandatory only if the proportion of beef exceeds 50%).
