On 14 February 2023, the Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) proposes to amend the Alcoholic Beverage Energy Labelling Regulations (Proposal P1059). The main elements are:

(1) Adding new definitions for average energy content, per serving, etc;

(2) Addition of the types of products exempted from making energy claims, including products whose labels have been labelled with a list of nutrients or whose labels have a surface area of less than 100 square centimetres, etc;

(3) Providing for the information content and reference labelling format of energy claims for alcoholic beverages, including the number of servings of food contained in each individually packaged product for sale, the specific quantity of each serving, and the energy contained in each serving;

(4) To stipulate the precautions for labelling energy claims of alcoholic beverages, such as if the average energy content of each serving or 100ml is less than 40 kJ, the energy claim may not be labelled with a specific value, but directly labelled as "less than 40 kJ", and so on.

The proposal is open for comments until 20 March 2023.
