On February 23, 2024, New Zealand officially issued the“Allergen Declarations, Warnings, and Advisory Statements on Food Labels”, which will be implemented from February 25, 2024. The declaration states that food companies must update labels and train staff so that the information they provide to customers complies with the new rules from February 25, 2024. Any food packaged and labeled before February 25, 2024 may be sold for an additional 2 years. The main contents are as follows: Food labels need to contain three main claims:
(1) Allergen statement: Allergens that must be listed on food labels include peanuts, almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, walnuts, pine nuts, pistachios, walnuts, crustacean mollusks, fish, milk, eggs, gluten (found in wheat, rye, barley, oats, spelt and triticale), wheat, soy, sesame, lupine, sulfites (if added in amounts 10mg/kg or more, must be listed);
(2) Warning statement: Food or beverage belonging to or containing royal jelly, kava, infant formula products or infant food, prepared complementary sports food, must be accompanied by a warning statement; The warning must be in writing with a height of at least 3mm or 1.5 mm on a small package (less than 100 square cm);
(3) prompt statement: Foods belonging to or containing bee pollen and propolis, milk or milk substitutes made from grains, nuts or seeds, unpasteurized egg products, quinine, guarana or caffeine, unpasteurized milk products, additives known to have a general purpose, For example, lactitol, maltitol, maltitol syrup, xylitol, mannitol, sorbitol, erythritol, isomaltol and polyglucose, aspartame or aspartame-acesulfamil salt, phytosterol, phytosteranol or its esters, need to add a reminder statement on the label, and there is no fixed wording for the reminder statement. You can choose your own text and font size, as long as it is readable.
