July 15, Hong Kong Consumer Council disclosed that after purchasing 30 common bottled water samples for testing in the local market, it was found that the bottled water samples of Baisuishan and Nongfu Spring from the Mainland of China were detected to have bromate of 3 micrograms per liter, which reaches the maximum limit of bromate applicable to ozonated natural mineral water and spring water in the European Union, but it is far lower than that of the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the The World Health Organization's drinking water quality standard of 10 micrograms of bromate per liter.

There is almost no bromate in water in nature. When drinking water is ozonated for disinfection and sterilization, the naturally occurring bromide in the water body will turn into bromate-like substances such as sodium bromate and potassium bromate under the action of ozone. According to the Consumer Council, ingestion of large quantities of bromate can lead to nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea, and in serious cases, may also affect the kidneys and the nervous system.
