On July 11, 2024, the Finnish Food Safety Authority (Ruokavirasto) released its 2023 Food Safety Report, which includes the following:
(1) Regulatory results: The regulatory and research results for 2023 show that food safety regulation in Finland is effective and food safety is generally at a good level. Although the number of regulations did not fully meet the target in some respects, the inspection results showed that the situation was generally good;
(2) Inspection results: about 22,500 inspections were conducted in 2023, an increase of about 10% over the previous year. Eighty-three percent of the inspection results were A or B grades, indicating that the business is in good health. However, there is still room for improvement, particularly in terms of the scope and frequency of inspections;
(3) Food-related diseases: There will be 55 food-related disease outbreaks in 2023, affecting 1,671 people, missing the target;
(4) Regulatory and surveillance programs: Regulatory and surveillance programs are well implemented, for example, Finland's Salmonella surveillance program shows that the detection rate of salmonella in domestic meat is less than 0.5%;
(5) Export supervision: Export supervision is divided into two parts: safeguarding existing export rights and opening new export rights. Exports to China, Russia and the United States decreased in 2023, but China remains Finland's most important non-EU food export destination.
