On August 13, 2024, Notice F2024L00986 was published on the Australian Federal Register website approving the revision of the standard for irradiated food (i.e. Proposal A1261).

The main element of the revision is to increase the maximum permitted energy level of X-rays used to irradiate food from 5 MeV (mega electron volts) to 7.5 MeV, provided that the machine source uses tantalum or gold as the target material.

The announcement is effective from the date of publication.
