On October 15, 2024, the Ministry of Health of Thailand issued a consultation paper (No. 454) to amend the Natural Mineral Water Food Act, which will take effect 180 days from the date of publication in the Government Gazette. The main revisions are:
(1) Revise the definition of natural mineral water to exclude water from natural sources, etc;
(2) Define five categories of natural mineral water;
(3) Clarify the requirements for the quality of natural mineral water, such as improving the quality of natural mineral water must be carried out in the area where the natural mineral water is loaded, and the important compounds in the natural mineral water must not be changed;
(4) Make new regulations on the minerals contained in natural mineral water, adjusting that the manganese content shall not exceed 2mg/L, barium content shall not exceed 1mg/L, and selenium content shall not exceed 0.05mg/L, etc;
(5) Make limit requirement for detected pollutants: revise the nitrite content shall not exceed 0.02mg/L, bromide shall not exceed 10ug/L, etc;
(6) Make microbiological requirement: per 250ml shall not detect E. coli and coliforms, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, etc.;
(7) Revise production norms: producers and distributors of natural mineral water must comply with the Ministry of Health's circular on methods of production, use and storage of food. Such as the use of ultraviolet light sterilization, etc., but must not affect the quality of water, and producers must also take measures to prevent environmental pollution;
(8) Revise labeling requirements: labels must show the type of natural mineral water, to show the main types of minerals, warning words to be visible in the red and white box, the height of not less than 2 millimeters; labeling of fluorine words for natural mineral water containing more than 1mg of fluorine per liter; the requirement to display advertising information on labels, and shall not identify natural mineral water can be used for the treatment or prevention of disease, or to make misunderstanding of the information, etc..
