U.S. revised yoghurt standards

On 20 November 2024, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) revised the standard for yoghurt with effect from the date of publication. Key elements:

  

(1) Yoghurt must comply with the high protein, fat-free labelling requirements of the US Federal Food and Drug Regulations; total sugar must not exceed 23g/6oz for yoghurts sold before 30 June 2025, and 12g/6oz for products on or after 1 July 2025;

  

(2) Label colours must include at least two other colours in addition to black and white; graphics (photographs or illustrations) describing the contents of the product or a window that allows a clear view of the product's contents must be included on the main display surface of the package.
