Brazilian government confirming the discovery of BSE and suspending beef exports to China
On September 4, the Brazilian government issued an announcement confirming the discovery of two Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) cases and suspending beef exports to China.
The announcement showed that the two BSE cases occurred in Minas Gerais in the southeast of Brazil and Mato Grosso in the west. At present, the Brazilian government has officially notified the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) of the above-mentioned cases, and the related farms have been quarantined. based on the sanitation agreement signed between Brazil and the State Administration for Market Regulation of China, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture decided to suspend beef exports to China from September 4 until the relevant Chinese authorities complete relevant assessments.
China is an important export market for Brazilian beef. According to statistics from the Brazilian Association of Refrigeration Industry Enterprises, in the first half of this year, Brazilian beef exports to China and sales accounted for about 60% of its total. The association also stated that recently, the news of suspected BSE cases has affected the beef-related industries in Brazil. Commercial activities in the freezing industry have shown signs of slowing down, and beef prices have declined slightly.
