Japan to revise health food labeling rules

On August 9, 2022, Japan's Consumer Affairs Agency issued Proposal 235070040 to revise the labeling regulations on health food. The main contents of the revision include:

(1) The scope of products applicable to the regulations is clearly defined as food under tablet and capsule form;

(2) New categories of health effects allowed to be claimed by health food, including prevention of cognitive impairment, improvement of immunity, promotion of metabolism, etc.;

(3) New requirements for efficacy display on health food labels and advertisements;

(4) New examples of prohibited use and claims and promotion of health food advertisements and labels;

(5) Revised the preconditions for the use of some health claims (for example, to help people lose weight).

The comment period of this proposal will end by September 7, 2022.
