On 28 August 2024, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply issued Resolution SDA/MAPANo1170 in the Official Gazette, establishing technical regulations on the characteristics and quality of dairy products containing complex ingredients for human consumption, which will be implemented from the date of publication.
The main contents include:
Definition and classification of applicable product scope: Composite dairy products refer to products derived from milk or its derivatives, with or without non-milk ingredients;
Requirements for the use of raw materials: Composite dairy products without non-milk ingredients should contain only milk source ingredients; the milk content of complex dairy products with non-dairy ingredients (such as sugar, honey, eggs, coffee, seasonings, etc.) should not be less than 50%;
The sensory and quality requirements of the product: The milk protein content of solid complex dairy products without non-dairy ingredients should not be less than 13%, and liquid products should not be less than 1.9%, respectively. Solid complex dairy products with non-dairy ingredients should contain no less than 9% milk protein, and Liquid products should not be less than 1.3%, etc.);
Microbial health standards: such as salmonella, E. coli should not be detected;
Product labeling requirements: such as product sales name should reflect the name or information of non-dairy ingredients that give the product distinctive characteristics, products with added vegetable fats should be indicated on the label "added vegetable fat" prompt, etc..
