Australia has announced that it has reached an agreement to export plums to Vietnam in addition to peaches and nectarines.
The project is part of a two-way agricultural market access agreement for the supply of Australian plums to Vietnam and Vietnamese passion fruit to Australia.
In 2023-2024, Australia's exports of agricultural, fishery and forestry products to Vietnam have reached 3.7 billion Australian dollars (about 2.5 billion US dollars), with growing fruit and nut trade activities further strengthening the trade relationship between Vietnam and Australia.
At present, Vietnam and Australia are negotiating the export of Australian blueberries to Vietnam and Vietnamese pomelo to Australia. Vietnam is an important market for Australian exporters and is at the heart of Australia's Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040.
The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Julie Collins, said entering this new market was an important milestone for the fruit industry and Australia's trade relationship with Vietnam. The promotion of mutual market access reflects the strong bilateral relationship between Australia and Vietnam and is a driving force to support the Australian agricultural sector in taking advantage of export opportunities.
Meanwhile, Australia's Minister for Trade and Tourism, Don Farrell, said promoting trade with Southeast Asian countries, including Vietnam, is a top priority for the Australian government. Boosting trade with Vietnam means more jobs and improved incomes for Australian agricultural workers.
