Ukraine to amend food regulations on the production, distribution and labelling of organic products

On October 16, 2024, the Ministry of Agricultural Policy and Food of Ukraine issued a revised draft of the Basic Principles and Requirements for Organic Production, Circulation and Labelling, which includes:

 

(1) Provide the basic principles and requirements for the organic production, circulation, labelling and import and export of organic products, as well as the laws and organisational principles of state control, which are implemented to verify whether operators and groups of operators comply with the legal requirements in the field of organic production, circulation and labelling of organic products, as well as the supervision of authorized certification bodies;

 

(2) Stipulate the basic rights and obligations of producers and operators of organic products, the powers of regulatory authorities, as well as the national supervision and certification rules for organic products in the field of production, circulation and labeling, which shall comply with the principles of legality, fairness, openness, coordination, objectivity and sustainable development;

 

(3) Specify the general requirements in the process of organic production, circulation and labeling, comply with the relevant organic requirements, prohibit the mixing of the same organic and non-organic ingredients in an organic product, avoid contamination during storage and transportation, organic food should be more than 95% organic ingredients, should be labeled in accordance with the Law of Ukraine on Food Consumer Information, and indicate the proportion of organic ingredients. Food produced with genetically modified ingredients is prohibited from using the "organic" name.
