Vietnam's tuna exports reached about $93 million in October, up 22 percent from a year earlier, the General Administration of Customs of Vietnam said. This is the first time that Vietnam's monthly exports of this product exceeded the $90 million mark, and the total export volume in the first 10 months of this year reached $821 million, an increase of 18%.
According to the Vietnam Fisheries Export and Processing Association, if this growth trend is maintained, the country's total tuna exports are expected to reach $1 billion this year, an increase of 18 percent year-on-year.
With the exception of the European Union and South Korea, Vietnam's tuna exports to major markets increased in October. Making full use of the preferential tariff quotas and the difficulties faced in implementing the regulations on Combating Illegal, Unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing will hinder Vietnam's tuna exports to the EU in the final months of the year. In October, Vietnam's tuna exports to the market fell 10 percent from a year earlier, but thanks to good growth in the early months, total exports for the first 10 months were still up 17 percent from a year earlier.
After slowing growth in the third quarter, Vietnam's tuna exports to the United States accelerated again in the final months. Consumption of fish products gradually recovered during the year-end holidays, and the US presidential election also led to an increase in demand for tuna imports from the country. Vietnam's tuna exports to the US rose 30 per cent in October from a year earlier. In addition, the increasing demand for tuna imports from the Middle East market has contributed to the increasingly strong growth of Vietnam's exports to this market.
It is worth noting that in October this year, Vietnam's tuna exports to Japan showed a recovery trend, with exports up 31% year-on-year. The reason is that the country's economy has improved, and the sharp appreciation of the national currency since September has increased the demand for imports of aquatic products in the country.
