On November 27, 2024, the U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) adjusted the uniform compliance date (2024) for food labeling regulations. The major elements are as follows:

(1) January 1, 2028 is established as the uniform compliance date for new meat and poultry commodity labeling regulations that will be issued between January 1, 2025 and December 31, 2026;

(2) FSIS periodically announces the uniform compliance dates for new meat and poultry product labeling regulations to minimize the economic impact of labeling changes;

(3) The new uniform compliance date applies only to final FSIS regulations that require labeling changes for meat and poultry commodities and are issued after January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2026. For each final rule that requires a labeling change, FSIS will specifically identify January 1, 2028 as the compliance date. All meat and poultry food commodities subject to labeling regulations issued between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2026, must comply with these regulations for commodities placed in commerce on or after January 1, 2028, as applicable. If any of the food labeling regulations address special circumstances that require compliance with a date other than January 1, 2028, the agency will determine the appropriate compliance date and will publish that compliance date in the rulemaking.
