According to the General Administration of Customs of Vietnam, as of mid-December 2024, Vietnam's cashew nut exports have reached 4.2 billion US dollars. This is the first time in the history of the Vietnamese cashew industry that exports exceeded the $4 billion mark, marking a new step for the Vietnamese cashew industry in maintaining exports of more than $3 billion for many years.
In 2017, Vietnam's cashew nut exports exceeded $3 billion for the first time. At present, the processing of raw cashew nuts into export cashew nuts has been invested in modern machinery, basically replacing manual labor, and the processing capacity has reached about 2 million tons/year, and continues to grow rapidly.
Overall, Vietnam still mainly exports low-value pre-processed cashews, and the finished cashews purchased directly by consumers have not yet been developed, so Vietnam only accounts for about 30% of the value chain of the cashew industry.
Trade and export activities of cashew nuts and processed cashew kernel foods have expanded to all developed markets in the world, among which the EU, the United States and China are the top three import markets for Vietnamese cashew nuts, accounting for more than 90% of Vietnam's cashew nut exports.
As of December 15, 2024, Vietnam exported 696,000 tons of cashews, much higher than the record 644,000 tons in 2023. It is expected that in 2024, Vietnam's cashew nut exports will exceed the 700,000 tons mark for the first time.
Higher export prices also pushed exports to a new record. In the first 10 months of 2024, the average export price of Vietnamese cashew nuts reached $5,873 / ton, up 3% from the same period last year.
The overall growth of cashew nut exports to traditional markets has been good this year. In the first 10 months of 2024, US cashew nut exports grew by 33%, China by 14%, the Netherlands by 14%, the UAE by 75%, Germany by 24% and Canada by 30%.
