Saudi Arabia plans regulation of supplementary food for infants and young children

On September 20, 2022, the Food and Drug Authority of Saudi Arabia issued a consultation document to formulate regulations on supplementary food for infants and young children. The feedback period ends on Nov 20, 2022. The main contents are as follows:


(1) Scope. It is suitable for infants over 6 months to eat supplementary food, not suitable for infant formula milk powder or milk food for special medical purposes;

(2) Definition. High protein cereals, biscuits, crispbread, etc., 7 related definitions;

 

(3) General requirements. Banned the use of certain hydrogenated oils, sweeteners, pork products or their derivative products, radiation treatment, hormones and antibiotics in all foods; Quality standards: moisture, texture, particle size and purity requirements; Special requirements: food can be prepared according to label instructions, hardness and consistency suitable for swallowing; The content requirements of various nutrients (protein, sugar, fat, etc.); The maximum allowed amount of ethyl vanillin and vanillin was 7mg/100g.

 

(4) Food labeling requirements. Product name, nutritional composition table, energy value, instructions for use, important instructions, etc. Other special requirements: gluten-free, the expression"gluten-free" can be added; The food label should not be declared as substitute for breastfeeding, etc.
