Indonesia informed 2022 health products containing medicinal chemicals and prohibited/dangerous ingredients survey results

According to the news of the Public alert section of the Food and Drug Administration website on October 4, 2022, the Indonesian Food and Drug Administration (BPOM) issued a public statement on the findings of the 2022 survey on the presence of medicinal chemicals and prohibited/hazardous ingredients in health products (health supplements), traditional medicines and cosmetics.

Reri Indriani, an official of the Indonesian Food and Drug Administration (BPOM), said in a press release that more than 658,205 traditional medicines and health products (health supplements) with an economic value of IDR 27.8 billion were illegally sold and/or contained illegal ingredients between October 2021 and August 2022. In addition, BPOM has learned that 95 traditional medicines and health supplements containing illegal ingredients and not registered with BPOM Indonesia are circulating illegally outside of Indonesia based on investigation reports from other countries' food and drug regulatory authorities.

 

BPOM will continue to strengthen the regulation of food and drug online sales to track and prevent illegal traditional medicines, health products and cosmetics containing medicinal chemicals from being sold in online media. Between October 2021 and August 2022, BPOM withdrew links to 82,995 traditional medicines and health products that were illegally sold and/or contained illegal ingredients, with a total product value of 25.6 million units with an economic value of IDR 515.37 billion.BPOM requires importers or manufacturers to recall or destroy traditional medicines and health products containing medicinal chemicals and prohibited/dangerous ingredients, and if signs of crime are found, BPOM will initiate judicial proceedings.
