Taiwan Reminder of import risk: a batch of oysters from United States with heavy metals exceed the standard

On November 1, 2022, the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a list of substandard food products at the border, showing that a batch of raw oysters from the US exceeded the standard for heavy metals.

 

The U.S. manufacturer or exporter’s named is OPTIMUMS LLC, and the Taiwan importer was Pure Natural Resources Co., according to the notice.

The heavy metal cadmium with 2 mg/kg was detected in the oysters. According to the Health Standards for Contaminated Substances and toxins in Food, the limit of cadmium in shellfish (excluding shells) is 1 mg/kg, which is not in accordance with Article 17 of the Food Safety and Health Administration Law.

 

A total of 176 kg of unqualified products were returned or destroyed.
