South Korea revises border inspection rules for imported GM agricultural products

On November 14, 2022, the South Korean Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency (APQA) under the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs issued Notice No. 2022-44, revising the border inspection regulations on imported GM(genetically modified) agricultural products. The major revisions are:

(1) Stipulate that GM products of agriculture, forestry and animal husbandry imported in fiber bags, cans and plastic packaging should be marked with the words "LMO" on the outer packaging;

(2) Stipulate that unqualified agricultural GMO products can be supervised by verifying the return waybill provided by the importer or agent in addition to on-site return supervision;

(3) To revise the official name of genetically modified tomatoes;

(4) Revision of sampling standards for on-site inspection of agricultural GMO products at the border.

 

The announcement shall go into effect as of the date of promulgation.
