Chile amends Food Hygiene Regulations

On 11 November 2022, the Chilean Ministry of Health issued Decree No. 70, amending the Food Hygiene Regulations. The decree will take effect 18 months after it is published in the official gazette. The main revisions are as follows:


(1) All edible salt must be added with iodine, in the form of iodate (sodium iodide or potassium iodide), the concentration of iodine in table salt: 0.015-0.025g/kg. Iodine must also be added to low sodium salts as required. Do not use iodized salt on fresh, semi-ripe and ripe cheese;


(2) Transitional provisions. The concentration of iodine in table salt shall be 0.015-0.04g/kg after the regulation takes effect, and 0.015-0.025g/kg after 30 months after the regulation takes effect.
