Indonesia set out the types of microorganisms that can be used in processed food

On February 7, 2023, the Indonesian Food and Drug Administration (BPOM) issued “Announcement No. 38 of 2023” to formulate the types of microorganisms that can be used in processed foods, which will be implemented on the date of issuance. main content:


(1) The types of microorganisms allowed to be eaten are as follows: Bacillus coagulans, Bifidobacterium, Bifidobacterium breve, Bifidobacterium lactis, Bifidobacterium longum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus yeast, Lactobacillus, para-cheese Lactobacillus, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus reuteri, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Leuconostoc citrus, Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. Bulgaria subsp., Streptococcus salivarius subsp. thermophilic bacteria;


(2) Processed food enterprises that have obtained a business license must implement the requirements of this regulation within 30 months after the regulation takes effect, and processed food enterprises that are applying for a business license must comply with this regulation;


(3) The types of microorganisms used in processed foods can be used in combination of one or more types; the total number of bacterial colonies in processed foods within the shelf life should not exceed 1,000,000 CFU/g (or CFU/ml);


(4) This provision applies to all processed foods except foods for special purposes.
