India revised Food Safety and Standards in 2023

On February 28, 2023, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued CG-DL-E-23023-24382 Announcement to revise food safety and standards in 2023. It will be implemented since September 1, 2023. Main contents include:


(1) Revised standards of 15 kinds of millets, including: Barnyard Millet, Finger Millet, Pearl Millet etc., which specifies 8 quality parameters i.e. maximum limits for moisture content, uric acid content, extraneous matter, other edible grains, defects, weevilled grains, and immature and shrivelled grains, so as to ensure availability of good quality (standardized) millets in domestic and global markets.


(2) Olive oil standard, goat milk standard (soap value 167-192, no saponin does not exceed 1.5/kg, and the acid value is not greater than 6.0); Desiccated Coconut, with moisture limit of 3%; definition of Wheat Flour (moisture limit of 14.0%, the total gray limit of 2.0%, etc.); frozen rice (water content is less than 14.0%); fresh eggs are stored at the environmental temperature (30.0 ± 5.0 ° C) for 2 weeks from the date of production of eggs, and then be stored at the refrigerated temperature(2.0 to to to 8.0 ° C), the shelf life of five weeks from the date of supply; the standard for processing coconut juice, packaging and drinking water; the heavy metal and sanitary standards of Steviol glycosides are shown in the following table.
