According to the announcement on plant quarantine requirements issued by the General Administration of Customs of China, by the end of 2022, a total of 16 kinds of fresh fruits from 13 countries had signed the quarantine requirements for export to China last year, of which 14 kinds of fruits except Tanzania avocado and Zimbabwe citrus have been listed. The "List of Fresh Fruit Types and Exporting Countries/Regions Accessed by my country's Inspection and Quarantine" has obtained the admission qualification (see the table below for the specific list).
Indonesia and Vietnam each have 2 kinds of fruits that have been admitted. Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Iran have obtained the admission qualification for the first time. The citrus fruits in Taiwan, China are the only varieties that have been removed from the access list. At the same time, Chile also has 14 kinds of frozen fruits such as frozen strawberries and blueberries, which are eligible for access. Although 2022 has experienced a rather severe year of the epidemic, China's fruit imports are still on the rise, driven by the continuous growth of imported fruit access, with a total annual total of 14.6 billion U.S. dollars (about 99.213 billion yuan), a year-on-year an increase of 8%. Among them, the total amount of fruit imports was 7.33 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 4%.
From the perspective of access countries and regions, China's top five imported fruit suppliers in terms of import volume in 2022 are Thailand (US$6.28 billion, a year-on-year increase of 3.8%), Chile (US$3.35 billion, a year-on-year increase of 22 kinds) and Chile (US$3.35 billion, a year-on-year increase 40.8%) with 13 types of products, Vietnam (US$1.27 billion, a year-on-year increase of 42.7%) with 11 types of products, the Philippines (US$670 million, a year-on-year increase of 3.1%) with 7 types of products, New Zealand (630 million US dollars, an increase of 1.6% year-on-year) for 12 kinds of products. In addition, countries and regions with more than 10 varieties of access include China Taiwan (18 kinds), Australia (14 kinds), and the United States (10 kinds).
From the perspective of admitted products, among China's top five imported fruit varieties in terms of import volume in 2022, durian has access to 3 countries and regions (Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia), and cherries have access to 11 countries and regions (Chile, New Zealand). Mainly), bananas have access to 14 countries and regions (mainly Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia), mangosteen has access to 5 countries and regions (Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Myanmar and Malaysia), and coconuts have access to 4 countries and regions (Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia and Taiwan). It can be seen that, except for cherries, the other four fruit access countries in the top five are mainly from Southeast Asia. In addition, citrus (19 access countries and regions) and grapes (18 access countries and regions) have more access areas, followed by the total import value.
Judging from the actual import volume, Vietnam is undoubtedly the biggest winner of newly admitted fruits. Its bananas and durians have quickly achieved success in the Chinese market. In November 2022, Vietnam and China signed the Protocol on Plant Quarantine Requirements for Exporting Fresh Bananas to China, switching from border trade to formal export, replacing the Philippines as China's largest source of imported bananas. According to statistics, in February 2023, China's largest source of banana imports was Vietnam, accounting for 45%; the Philippines fell to second place, accounting for 29%; Cambodia still ranked third, accounting for 16%. Vietnamese durian has also changed the dominance of Thai durian in China's fresh durian market. According to statistics, from October 2022 to February 2023, Vietnam's durian exports to China will reach 53,000 tons, with an amount of 1.74 billion yuan, respectively reaching Thailand's durian exports accounted for 43.2% and 38.2% of the total durian exports to China in the same period. The average export unit price of Vietnamese durians is 32.8 yuan/kg, which is only 11.4% lower than that of Thai durians. After entering 2023, the reopening of China's borders has brought many export opportunities for Vietnamese bananas, durians and other fruits. Various fruits in Vietnam are also making full use of opportunities from various free trade agreements to increase exports.
