Recently, Thai government spokesperson Anucha Burapachaisri stated that the Thai Prime Minister has instructed the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Agriculture to take active measures to maintain the prosperity of the fruit industry. These measures cover fruit production, domestic promotion, overseas market expansion, and the reduction of tariffs and obstacles through trade negotiations.
The fruit export target set by the Thai Ministry of Commerce this year is 4.44 million tons, an increase of 10% year-on-year. The export target of durian alone is as high as 100 billion baht, about 20.05 billion yuan. To reduce oversupply caused by early harvesting, farmers will harvest according to local harvest schedules and release them to the market when prices are higher.
Despite the ongoing economic downturn caused by the new crown virus, Thailand's fruit exports have been growing at a double-digit rate for the past few years. Thailand's durian exports have also been boosted this month due to the opening of the China-Laos-Thailand train linking Thailand's Rayong province. It only takes 5-6 days for durians to arrive in Guangzhou from the Map Ta Phut Industrial Port in Thailand. The transportation is cheaper, faster and safer.
