Although it has not yet entered the current season, Vietnam's durian exports have grown rapidly in the first three months of 2023. Especially in the Chinese market, the export value of durian has been equal to that of dragon fruit, accounting for 23% of Vietnam's total fruit and vegetable exports to China. Durian accounts for 16% of Vietnam's total fruit exports, and dragon fruit accounts for 17%.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam (MARD) predicts that the supply of durian will begin to increase in April and May, and it is expected that the export of such products will achieve "explosive" growth in the near future.
According to customs data, in the first quarter of 2023, Vietnam's durian exports reached US$153 million, a year-on-year increase of more than 7.3 times. China accounted for 87% of the market with US$134 million in imports.
In the Chinese market, after durian and dragon fruit, bananas, jackfruit and mangoes are selling well. China is also the largest export market for Vietnamese fruits and vegetables, accounting for 41%. The export of Vietnamese agricultural products to China is ushering in many convenient factors.
Specifically, in April, many border crossings between Vietnam and China extended their operating hours to 22 hours a day. In addition, in April, the General Administration of Customs of China has also approved and awarded codes to 70 sweet potato planting areas and 13 packaging factories that meet the requirements of exporting to the country through formal trade channels.
It is estimated that in the second quarter of 2023, Vietnam's vegetable and fruit exports will continue to show a strong momentum of development, and the growth rate in 2023 is expected to exceed 10%, reaching US$4 billion, a year-on-year increase of 20%. In 2023, durian exports are expected to reach US$1 billion.
