Since the end of April, shipments of Peruvian avocados have increased significantly. In week 17 alone, Peru exported 15,849 tons of avocados to the global market, which is 34% more than the previous week and 1% more than the same period in 2022. At present, the total export volume of Peruvian avocados this season has exceeded 100,000 tons, while the export volume in the same period last year was less than 95,000 tons.
The main destinations for Peruvian avocado exports in the 17th week were the Netherlands, Spain and mainland China. These three markets accounted for 36%, 28% and 14% of the total shipments respectively. Notably, these countries are also the top three markets for export activity throughout 2023.
According to previous reports, the Peruvian Avocado Association (ProHass) focused its work this season on increasing export diversification in order to reduce dependence on trade with European countries. China, one of the key markets this season, imported 2,192 tons of avocados in week 17, a 15-fold increase compared to the same period last year. The significant change in import volume is mainly due to the strict epidemic prevention and control measures implemented in China during the same period in 2022, which suppressed demand in cities such as Shanghai, the main market for imported agricultural products, and large-scale logistics disruptions also affected import activities. Meanwhile, Peruvian exports to the Netherlands and Spain were 5,643 tonnes and 4,377 tonnes in week 17, down 26% and 18%, respectively, compared to the same period in 2022.
In 2022, the Netherlands and Spain will rank first and third, respectively, among Peru's avocado export destinations, and the United States will rank second. In 2022, Peru's market position will be strengthened due to the temporary suspension of US avocado imports from Mexico. However, this year, due to the late start of marketing activities in the Peruvian avocado industry, large-scale publicity in the U.S. market only started in April, and the U.S. import volume temporarily lags behind. At the same time, China ranks among the top three major importing countries, releasing a positive signal of market recovery.
The Peruvian avocado export season can last from January to October, with the peak export period from May to August. In recent years, Peru's avocado exports have increased significantly. In 2020, Peruvian Hass avocado exports will total 367,933 tons, which will increase to 483,017 tons in 2021 and further increase to 554,498 tons in 2022. According to data from the Peruvian Avocado Association (ProHass), the total export of Peruvian avocados is expected to reach 624,000 tons in 2023, an increase of 12.5% over 2022 and a sharp increase of 70% over 2020.
