US to release labels and cross-contact guidelines for major food allergens

On May 16, 2023, according to the U.S. Federal Register, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued Notice 2023-10523, Sec.555.250“Major Food Allergen Labeling and Cross-contact Draft Compliance Policy Guide”, which will supersede the existing FDA enforcement policy on labeling and Cross-contact to Major Food Allergens. The guidelines include: the major allergen substances and definitions; allergen labelling requirements; allergens cross-contact and manufacturing requirements applicable to the prevention of cross-contact caused by major food allergens; voluntary disclosure of allergens on food; and relevant regulatory policy requirements.


The draft has a comment period ending July 16, 2023.
