South Korea revised imported food safety regulations

On August 10, 2023, the Ministry of Food and Drug of Korea (MFDS) issued a notice to revise the import food safety management regulations, which will be implemented from February 9, 2024. The main revisions are as follows:

 

1. Definition of relevant name terms, employment of relevant departments and relevant laws;

 

2. The importer must apply to the MFDS Minister for registration before the declaration of imported food or the change of the matter;

 

3. New added: Registration or alteration of the registration of the overseas industry in accordance with false or other improper methods shall be cancelled; In case of cancellation of registration, the importer applying for registration or change of registration of the overseas manufacturing institute shall not apply for registration within 2 years from the date of cancellation of registration;

 

4. The MFDS Minister may, in advance, consult with the government of the exporting country or the overseas manufacturing institute, and conduct a site visit to the registered overseas manufacturing institute in accordance with the application registration, if he considers the imported food to be hazardous;

 

5. The detailed procedures and methods, such as the suspension of import of livestock products or cancellation of registration of overseas workshops, lifting of import interruption or re-registration of overseas workshops, and the disclosure of information as stipulated in Article 3, shall be prescribed by decree of the Prime Minister.
