On August 24, the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) issued an important announcement on the discharge of nuclear sewage in Japan, the full text is as follows:
In order to comprehensively prevent radioactive contamination risks to food safety caused by the discharge of water contaminated by the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan, protect the health of Chinese consumers, and ensure the safety of imported food, in accordance with the “Food Safety Law of the People's Republic of China” and its implementing regulations, the “Measures of the People's Republic of China for the Administration of import and Export Food Safety”, and the WTO’s “Agreement On The Application Of Sanitary And Phytosanitary Measures”, GACC has decided to suspend the import of aquatic products (including edible aquatic animals) originating in Japan from August 24, 2023 (inclusive).
