News on official website of Russian Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision on September 26: At the 11th meeting of the Permanent Working Group of Sino-Russian veterinary, phytosanitary and food safety cooperation, the bureau discussed with Chinese representatives about the radiation safety issue of its export of aquatic products to Japan, and clearly will jointly determine the detection method of radioactive substances produced in Japanese aquatic products after the discharge of nuclear sewage from the Fukushima first nuclear power plant.
In addition, the agency also sent a letter to the competent veterinary authorities in Japan requesting them to provide information on the country's testing methods for radioactive substances, including tritium, in exported aquatic products by October 16. Considering the potential risk of nuclear contamination, the Russian side said that it may join China in restricting the import of Japanese aquatic products. Russia will make a final decision after negotiations with Japan.
According to the Russian website, Japan's exports of aquatic products to Russia are low, with only 190 tons exported in 2022. As of September 2023, Russia imported only 118 tons of Japanese aquatic products.
At present, Russia has not developed a test method for tritium in aquatic products.
