South Africa publishes food standards for canned and pickled vegetables

On 17 November 2023, the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development of South Africa issued Bulletin No.4070 through Government Gazette No. 49720, setting out the Food Standards for Canned and Preserved Vegetables for sale in the South African Market.

 

The main contents of the standard include: Applicable product scope (imported or South African domestic vegetable products after heat sterilization or curing treatment), product classification, terminology and definition, canned and pickled vegetable products general requirements (such as raw materials in line with inspection and quarantine health requirements, safe and clean processing, raw materials added in line with regulatory requirements, etc.), 26 types of canned and pickled vegetable products sensory quality requirements and grading standards, production Sanitary management regulations of the whole process of processing, microbial hygiene standards of the final product (such as salmonella, Escherichia coli, Clostridium botulinum, staphylococcus aureus shall not be detected), internal and external packaging and labeling regulations of the product (labels should be marked with product name, type, grade, country of origin, manufacturer and production date and other information), sampling and inspection.

 

The standard will take effect 7 days after its publication in the Government Gazette.
