On December 19, 2023, the Romanian Legislative Portal published Law 411 on the creation of a new regulation on the Labelling and Marketing Requirements of Insect-based Foods, which will enter into force 30 days after its publication. According to the regulation, foods containing yellow flour worm meal, house crickets and migratory locusts (which are authorized as novel foods under relevant EU legislation) will meet the following requirements:

(1) The prohibition of the use of novel foods in the preparation and production of traditional Romanian products and recipes;

(2) Accurately indicate the legal or current name or descriptive name of the authorized new food on the product label;

(3) Include allergen warnings related to the relevant ingredients on the product label;

(4) Products containing insect ingredients will be sold separately from conventional foods that do not contain any authorized insects, etc.
