On 26 January 2024, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan (MAFF) revised the standard for carbonated beverages, with the main revisions being:
(1) Change the scope of application of the standard;
(2) Increase the general standard for food additives, fruit juice drinks as a reference standard;
(3) Increase the raw material requirements, water can not contain free chlorine, sugar ash ≤ 0.03% by acid anhydride, fruit glucose syrup ash ≤ 0.015% by acid anhydride;
(4) Increase the quality requirements of additives, carbon dioxide purity should be greater than 99.95%, additives should comply with the provisions of CODEX STAN 192 3.2, and the conditions of use should be consistent with the provisions of 3.3.
