On April 18, 2024, the Finnish Food Authority released its Annual Report on Food Recalls 2023, which shows that:

A total of 250 recalls were initiated in Finland in 2023, with the total number of recalls declining for the second consecutive year. The most common reasons for recalls include: pesticide residues, microbial contamination, and the presence of undeclared allergens;

(2) The decrease in the total number of recalls in 2023 is partly due to a significant decrease in the amount of ethylene oxide residues detected in food compared to the previous two years;

Contamination with various microorganisms such as salmonella, listeria, and mold led to 49 recalls, 10 fewer than in 2022. The main contaminated foods include beef and poultry, nuts and bean sprouts. 19 cases were contaminated with salmonella.

(4) A total of 30 cases were recalled due to the presence of undeclared allergens, of which allergens (cereal gluten, peanuts and milk) were the most common reasons for recall;

(5) There were also 30 recalls due to food containing additives that were not allowed in the relevant food, or the amount of additives in the food exceeded the maximum allowable amount.
