Brazil to set standards for beverage production

On 14 April 2022, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA) issued Decree No. 562 to establish standards for beverage production. Main contents as below:

(1) General principal. Including: beverage production, trade registration, standardization, classification, inspection;  Wine beverages not included;  

 

(2) Purpose and definition of terms. Establish import, export, storage and transportation requirements for beverages and their raw materials;  

 

(3) Relevant requirements of beverage manufacturers;  

 

(4) Production record requirements;  

 

(5) Label requirements. Enterprise name/registration number, beverage name/trademark/ingredient list/quantitative indication of liquid content/percentage of alcohol volume/acetic acid concentration/batch/shelf life/retention method, etc.;  

 

(6) Beverage classification. Classification by alcohol content: non-alcoholic beverages, alcoholic beverages (greater than 0.5%, less than or equal to 54.0%);  According to the production process: unfermented beverage, fermented beverage, mixed beverage, distilled alcoholic beverage, etc.  

 

(7) Product standardization. Preliminary regulations, specific requirements for non-alcoholic beverages, fermented beverages, mixed beverages, distilled alcoholic beverages and alcoholic distillate;  

 

(8) Beverage labeling and quality requirements.  

 

(9) Raw material control requirements;  

 

(10) Requirements for official supervision documents;  

 

(11) Violation penalties and investigation and handling requirements.  

 

The period for feedback is 90 days.
